  This handcrafted Baby Pelham by Trust features a standard single-jointed mouthpiece and combines the effects of a snaffle and a curb bit. It can be ridden with either one or two reins, making it ideal for riders and horses that need to get accustomed to a double bridle. When used correctly with only one rein, Pelham straps are required to connect the bit rings to the shank rings. These straps are not included in the delivery.

  The mouthpiece is made of Sweet Iron alloy, which naturally stimulates salivation. When it comes into contact with moisture, it oxidizes and creates a sweet-tasting surface rust that encourages the horse to accept the bit. The single-jointed design applies pressure primarily to the bars and the sides of the tongue. A Pelham is easier to use than a double bridle because it has only one mouthpiece.

  Mouthpiece Thickness
  The mouthpiece measures 16 mm at its thickest point, making it a medium-thickness mouthpiece.
  For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is typically 16 mm to 18 mm, while ponies usually require a bit between 10 mm and 14 mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire horses often need a bit thicker than 18 mm. A thickness of around 12 mm is generally suitable for ponies.

  When selecting bit thickness and size, always consider the anatomical structure of your horse’s mouth. Use your fingers to feel how much space is available between the tongue and the palate to ensure a proper fit.

  Note: If not used for a while, a thin orange-brown layer of rust may develop on the mouthpiece. This can be easily removed with a damp cloth and does not indicate a defect in quality.
