The single-jointed loose ring snaffle is considered a gentle bit, suitable for young or sensitive horses. NOTE: The "nutcracker effect" is often mentioned in connection with single-jointed bits. However, this effect only occurs if the bit is too large for the horse. Whether a single or double jointed bit is better depends on the horse's preferences. If a horse tends to play a lot with the bit, a bit with fewer joints (single-jointed) is preferable. If the horse is calm in the mouth and more mouth activity is desired, a double-jointed bit might be better.
