The Baby Pelham applies leverage to the bars, chin, and poll. When the rider pulls on the reins, the upper branch moves forward and affects the poll, while the lower branch tilts backward and applies pressure on the mouth and chin.

The single-jointed mouthpiece sits more quietly in the mouth compared to a double-jointed mouthpiece and distributes pressure over the bars of the horse's mouth, with the central joint reducing pressure on the tongue. The SWEET Copper mouthpiece has a slightly sweet taste and is particularly well accepted by horses, and it may also encourage chewing.

A Pelham should always be used with caution and is not intended for horses that already show issues with basic training.
